History

Starting with its early days as a strategic fort erected by early Celtic tribes, Salamanca was always destined for greatness. The rise of the city's famous university, founded back in the 13th century, quickly had the world's academic authorities proclaiming the city as one of the world's four "leading lights." Sharing status with Paris, Bologna and Oxford didn't intimidate the city, but rather sparked its flourishing into a hub of culture and academia.
