The rise of the city's famous university, founded back in the 13th century by King Alfonso Vi, quickly had the world's academic authorities proclaiming the city as one of the world's four "leading lights." Sharing this status with Paris, Bologna and Oxford didn't intimidate Salamanca, but rather sparked its flourishing into a hub of culture and academia. Such famous figures as Miguel de Cervantes, Christopher Columbus, Ignatius Loyola, Hernán Cortes and Miguel de Unamuno have passed through the university's doors - some as lecturers, some as students and some as university authorities.
Architecturally, the university building is truly one of Salamanca's treasures. Plus, if you're able to find (without asking anyone, of course) the tiny, elusive frog hidden amongst the extreme decoration of the Plateresque facade, word on the street is that you're guaranteed good luck.
