Salamanca History
Salamanca History
Starting with its early days as a strategic fort erected by early Celtic tribes, Salamanca has changed hands several times and seen it all. Through it all, however, it's always been destined for greatness.

It has seen epochs of great prestige and debilitating decline, the book-burnings and executions of the harsh Spanish Inquisition, the first major turning point in the fight for European hegemony against Napoleon and much more. The city's true turning point, however, was the the rise of its famous university. Founded in the 13th century, it quickly became one of the world's four "leading lights" along with the prestigious universities of Paris, Bologna and Oxford. From there, the city flourished into a beautiful hub of culture and hasn't looked back since.
