Salamanca Culture

It may be a small city, but Salamanca's cultural scene packs a big punch. Beautiful architecture, interesting museums, tasty food, unique festivals... the list is endless. If it's any sign of what awaits you, Salamanca was named the European Capital of Culture in 2002 - no easy feat!

If you're interested in learning more about the culture of Salamanca and Spain, consider signing up for one of our academic Spanish courses. As you acquire an in-depth understanding of either Spanish history, art history or literature, your Spanish will improve even more than you can imagine!

ARCHITECTURE
Fittingly known as Spain's "Golden City," Salamanca is dressed from head to toe in sumptuously decorated sandstone. With everything from simple Romanesque chapels to sprawling Baroque plazas, Salamanca's architectural fame is in great part due to the wildly over-the-top ornamentation typical of the city's signature Plateresque and Churrigueresque façades.

***BONUS! Enforex Salamanca is housed in a classic example of Salamanca's beautiful architecture. Once a convent, the building has been renovated in recent years for the upmost comfort of our students. However, the historic building remains much the same and it still boasts a beautiful central courtyard.

MUSEUMS
Culture vultures will marvel at the eclectic collection of museums in Salamanca. Ranging from antique automobiles to Art Nouveau, the life and times of writer Miguel de Unamuno, religious art and the rituals of bullfighting, there's something for everyone.

GASTRONOMY
Salamanca, as well as the rest of the community of Castilla-León, is famous for its hearty dishes typical of the countryside. Famous for roasts and stews, local products - cheeses, meats, vegetables, grains and fruits - are combined in a variety of traditional and creative ways. The best way to get a taste of the regions specialties is by going out for tapas. Salamanca has endless bars and restaurants where you sample all that the Spanish countryside has to offer!

FESTIVALS
With cultural festivals, arts festivals, and a wide range of other events taking place throughout the city all year-round, you never know when you might run into an Argentinian film series, a sky-illuminating fireworks display, a laid-back jazz festival or a solemn religious procession.
